Merlot
Miles wouldn't drink it, but maybe you should. Merlot is a red grape variety grown all around
the world, but perhaps best known as one of the noble grapes that goes into the red Bordeaux blend,
helping give the wine both flavor and balance. Besides being an excellent blending grape, Merlot is also
fashioned into a delicious varietal wine by many of the world's winemakers.
Like its Bordeaux brother Cabernet Sauvignon, and unlike the fickle Pinot Noir grape, merlot can thrive in many
micro-climates and regions around the world. From Chile to Napa to Bordeaux to Italy and points in between, wines made of the Merlot grape
can be found at all levels of quality and price. In fact, one of the great wines of the world, Chateau Petrus, made in Pomerol in Bordeaux, France is
mostly made of Merlot.
Merlot has a medium body and less tannins than Cabernet Sauvignon. If you like aromas like blackberry, plum, and boysenberry, you may enjoy taking a whiff of a
glass of Merlot. Many Merlots are age-worthy, like Chateau Petrus.
